The Adventures of Captain Atom is a stop-motion animated epic created by Eli Hutchinson. Told through the LEGO® medium, the episodic story follows Captain Atom and his team as they attempt to take down a tyrant intent on destroying the world.

I joined the project as co-producer and VFX artist for the final two chapters, taking on a range of complex visual effects challenges. My primary focus was creating CG environments that seamlessly integrated with practical stop-motion footage—preserving the handmade aesthetic while delivering large-scale settings and high-energy action sequences. The work included stylized brick-based smoke, fire, and explosion simulations, as well as 2D motion graphics, all crafted to enhance the scale and drama without breaking the stop-motion illusion.

Early tests to finished shots. Creating LEGO®-brick fire, smoke, and explosion FX was a crucial task. This was achieved in Blender with a procedural system that instances bricks onto points generated from simulations that’ve been converted to VDBs.
